Flakes on a Plane

[NOTE: I fully expect that I butchered the spelling of some of the names here, and since some of the details were pulled from memory rather than my notes I cannot guarantee this summary does not contain errors. Everyone feel free to post corrections and any details I may have missed.]

Chapter 1:  The Prisoners are Revolting

Zekrum the warforged monk found himself on a parapet overlooking a beautiful valley, a monastery inside his mind.  There were three masters there, Yung, and human man, Marguazi, a woman who was a ki specialist, and Yuago, a weapons master.  (Master Jiang the strategist, a male with slight build and a long moustache, Master Margazwi the Burning Soul, a middle aged muscular woman who is an expert in Ki, and Master Yagyu the Sword Saint, a stern looking human).

They referred to Zekrum as little brother and asked him if he had learned a truth to share with them.  When he said no, they seemed puzzled, saying that they had not summoned him, so if he had not come of his own choice he should not be there.

With this revealed, Zekrum suddenly woke up, and found himself in darkness. He had no idea how he got there, and recalled only a sting, and smelling something that seemed alchemical. He was in a cave, and in front of him was a figure wearing an alabaster mask that was carved into a horrible grinning face. The figure told him that he was there because he was precious, and wasn’t he glad of that?

Zekrum still felt groggy, and found himself pushed into an alcove, where a pick was put into his hands and he was forced to start digging. This labor continued until he was thoroughly exhausted and about to drop, at which point rough hands hauled him out and pushed him into a different cave full of other prisoners. This dark cavern was a cell, with a rickety looking gate along one wall.  A faint blue glow illuminated the room through cracks in the stone in the wall opposite the gate, and through those cracks the dull roar of a monstrous wind could be heard.

One of the other prisoners was a bird person with brightly colored feathers, and he asked everyone to introduce themselves and tell the last thing they remember before finding themselves here. In addition to Zekrum, the prisoners included the following:

Aleseus the Bull- A minotaur who had just been living peacefully in the woods and communing with nature before he was rendered unconscious and captured.

Mzungu Bei- A member of a blue skined race of humanoids called a Vedalken, who hailed from Eberron. He said he was in the process of taking over his world, but it seemed he had only had limited success so far given that his domain was currently only comprised of his own apartment.

Goodnick – A Modron Duodrone from Mechanus who claimed to serve a Ki-Rin.  He said he had been awaiting trial when he was abducted. His body appeared clockwork, emitting whirring and clicking sounds, and he had 2 small wings on his back and was wearing a sash. He seemed quite concerned that he was missing his bell.

Saara Silvermane – A woman who appeared to be a human, but with an unnatural grace to her movements and glowing eyes.  She refused to answer questions and seemed somewhat in a panic at the situation in which she found herself.

Ogylo- A gnome wearing a loincloth, with dirty hands and feet.  He said he was out tending to his garden when he was abducted.

Kanithar the Undying- A human who appeared to be partially decayed, with glowing red eyes.  He said he had paid to be made into an undead creature to extend his life so that he might exist long enough to learn all the secrets of the universe.

A frog person, whose name we didn’t catch
An elven man who was lying against one wall unconscious

The bird person introduced himself as Zoso, and said he had been part of a research team that had been in these caverns when our captors, who were apparently mercenaries, came in a few months ago and  killed all the members of the research team other than him. (The research team was from the Izzet League)

The frog person seemed very agitated, and said we were in Pandemonium and that the lake of the Crab God was just outside these caves. Goodnick was very distressed to hear that we were in Pandemonium, and, apparently because he was feeling unsafe, he cast a spell and charmed Aleseus to serve as a protector. Aleseus was relatively unconcerned, and assumed that this “crab god” was just another title for Poseidon. (The grig called the crab god Kar'r'ga, and the scuttling creatures his petitioners)

At this point the discussion among the prisoners was interrupted  by the entrance of a big group of guards.  Many of them were rough looking humans that smelled faintly of alcohol, but there were a couple more of notable villains.
-A halfling man who bore tribal markings that Aleseus recognized as an indication that he was a barbarian.
-An elven man with magical, writhing tattoos on his arms. He wore a fur vest and had a whip that that seemed animated. This man was dragging the bodies of an elven man and woman who both looked beaten nearly to death. As he deposited these beaten prisoners in the cell he mentioned that someone named Cram had gotten a little to rough with them.  (Kraam)
-A tough looking dragonborn, who the others referred to as Caplain
-The man in the Alabaster Mask who had first greeted all of us when we woke up.  Now that we had a better look at him, we could see that his body was swathed in black, shapeless robes that made it difficult to make out the exact form of his body. Between the robes and his mask the only glimpse we had of his true form was one of his hands, which appeared red.  So maybe he was a demon?

When the guards entered Goodnick moved up and asked them to please return his bell, but when a guard put the point of his sword to Goodnick’s forehead the little guy remembered to be afraid and backed off, with Aleseus covering his retreat.

Alabaster Mask was carrying an unconscious man with obsidian colored skin, and after mentioning that the man was “not on the manifest” he threw the figure out one of the large cracks in the wall. Those who were near enough to see observed the body curve out strangely over the landscape, seeming to fall parallel to the ground rather than straight down, which seemed to be an odd effect of the gravity in Pandemonium. As he passed over the lake outside, we heard scuttling and snipping sounds as the claws of a bunch of lobster men reached up to snatch the body out of the air and brought the body down to be fed upon.  The frog man whispered to say that the man had been given to the aldani (apparently what the lobster men are called).

Our captors then left the cell, and while the lower ranking mercs seemed a little tipsy they still showed good discipline as they retreated out the gate.  As they were leaving, Mzungu offered to join them, but only if they gave him a management position with a minimum of 4 minions. They ignored him. Once they were gone, Saara tried to tend to the wounded elven newcomers. They actually didn’t appear to be normal elves, and had sort of ethereal, almost celestial quality to them, appearing like a type of elves that would look hot to other elves (maybe eladrin).  They seemed pretty resistant to Saara’s offer of assistance, and did not speak the common tongue. She tried to converse with them in elven, and they got very offended and admonished that she should not speak the language of that people if she was not of the people.

Goodnick used a healing spell to heal one of them, and they tried speaking to them in celestial, and they seemed much more receptive to that language. They said that they were on a diplomatic mission to the queen of air and darkness, a member of the unseely court, when they were captured by the mercenaries. Ildarin, the female was the diplomat in charge of their mission, and the male Ranial was her aide. (Reinael)

After being rebuffed by these newcomers, Saara went over to tend to the other elf in the room, who had been lying unmoving against the wall since we entered. As she went to help him, he winked at her and revealed that he was faking injury. Saara was not too pleased with that, and called him an asshole and gave him a shove.

The man said his name was Rush, and after beckoning several of us closer. He revealed that he had a plan for escape.  He said the caves we were in were surrounded by a ward that was set up by the original research team here. The ward kept out the winds of Pandemonium, which would otherwise be driving us mad, and it also kept the lobster people at bay. This ward had an additional effect that it blocked divination magic, which was preventing Rush’s allies from finding him to rescue him. He said if we could get him a length of copper wire to use as a spell component, he could use it to send a message to his allies so they could come rescue us. He said he knew that the component he needed was being kept in a room across the hall from our cell.

Rush also warned us to watch out for the kenku, Zozo, because he was not who he claimed to be.  Apparently kenku could only speak by mimicking phrases they had heard, and so the fact that he could talk normally revealed he was not really a member of the race he appeared to be.

Aleseus, in the meantime, had searched through the cave and managed to find 2 sharp stones that would make serviceable weapons. Since he had natural weapons of his own, he passed one of these slate daggers off to Kanithar, and was in the process of handing the other to Saara when the cell gate opened again, and 3 guards entered bearing a pot of gruel. The guards were talking amongst themselves, saying that business had been better than ever and that they could turn us in to the Orzhov Syndicate.

Now armed, Kanithar jumped to action and pushed one guard against the wall and tried to stab him, but the guard was able to twist away.  With the fight now joined, the rest of the group also attacked.  Goodnick blasted a hole in one with a ray of golden light while espousing the virtue of friendship, and Mzungu catapulted some stones from the ground into the one holding the pot of gruel and shattered his skull.  Aleseus lowered his head and charged with his horns at the one who Goodnick had wounded and punctured clean through him with a critical hit to shatter the man’s spine. Aleseus followed through with the charge to block in the final guard’s exit while Zekrum robot punched that guard to death.

While Aleseus kept watch at the gate, Saara, Kanithar, and Goodnick donned the armor of the fallen guards, and Saara and Kanithar claimed their swords.  The bodies were then dumped out the crack in the wall to feed the aldani.

At this point, Goodnick also dropped the charm spell on Aleseus.  The minotaur was more disappointed than angry at this, and told Goodnick he would have been his friend even without the spell. Goodnick sang a little song about being sorry.

The gate opened out onto a hallway that extended a little way to the left before ending in a door, and to the right it lead to the area where we had been set digging earlier.  To the right in the hallway there was a wall sconce that burned with a blue flame, probably powered by farts. We recalled that there was a barrel where we deposited our tools over near the cavern where we had been working, so that was also a possible source of weapons.  Immediately across the hall from our cell was a door, and presumably behind that was the copper wire that Rush needed.

Goodnick tried the door and found it locked, so he knocked on it.  A voice answered asking why he didn’t just use his key.  Oops, did those bodies we fed to the aldani have keys on them?  The voice asked who was knocking, and Goodnick answered “Mr. Guard”.

Shockingly, this appeared not to be the real name of any of our captors, because we heard the sound of multiple weapons being drawn.  The door opened so the guards could rush out to attack, but Aleseus once again lowered his head and charged, spearing the lead guard in the thigh and forcing him back into the room.  This created sufficient space for Zekrum, Saara, and Kanithar to also move in and attack. Ogylo cast Faerie Fire, wreathing the guards in a green glow that made them easier to hit, and Mzungu started launching magic stones into the room while Goodnick evoked sentiments of kindness to summon more blasts of golden light and blow holes in people. Between the ranged attacks of the casters and the horns, blades, and robo-fists of our warriors, we made short work of the guards.

Re: Flakes on a Plane

Chapter 2: Party Crashers

After defeating the guards, we found a suit of leather armor and a shortsword on each, but no keys. A search of the room, however, revealed another door in the back of the room and also a gnome who was hiding in one corner.  The gnome was dressed in leather armor, similar to the other guards, and on being discovered he surrendered, declaring that he was a non-combatant healer named Stitch.

Goodnick asked Stitch where his bell (and the rest of or equipment) was located, and the gnome said that it was with the stuff that was ready to be shipped out, over by Kramm’s chamber to the North.  He also revealed that this Kramm was a hill giant (yikes!).  The area where Kramm was located was called the front staging room, and it apparently also contained a portal that could be used to leave this place, but Stitch said that a portal key was required to open it.

Snitch mused that Captain Garsus hadn’t warned that we were going to be “hard cases.”  This Captain Garsus was the leader of this mercenary band, which was called the Gilded Chain. Apparently Garsus was the dragonborn we had seen come into our cell earlier, and I accidentally misheard his name as “Caplan” when they were referring to him as Captain. This Captain Garsus had taken over the Gilded Chain after their last leader, Captain Goldfinch, was killed about 6 months ago. Since then they had hired a bunch of new guys and started taking on new sorts of jobs that Stitch didn’t seem to be overly fond of.

One of those jobs was working for an organization called the Orzhov Syndicate, which had put out a collection list which had included all our names. Snitch said the Orzhov syndicate was like a church combined with a bank, and they were behind a lot of seedy undertakings.

Besides Captain Garsus, some of the other people in the Gilded Chain were Otho (the creepy elf with the living tattoos) and Joy (the even creepier guy in the alabaster mask).  Stitch referred to Joy as a “nightmare” and said none of the mercs had seen under his mask. Otho was also apparently pretty tough, because Snitch said that he was probably the only one of the mercs who could fight Kramm and have a chance of winning. He said that Joy and Otho were probably the guys who had been sent to collect all of us. As bad as those guys were, however, Stitch confirmed that Captain Garsus was the guy in charge.

Stitch also revealed that behind the other door in the guardroom we were in there were about 10 other guards that were currently drinking, playing cards, and generally partying. The door to that room was barred from the other side, but Stitch told us the password needed to open the door was “cutlass.” He also confirmed that some of the other prisoner gear was in that room, so that was likely where we would find Rush’s copper wire, or barring that the coins the guards were gambling with would likely include at least 1 copper piece that Rush could use to fashion a new one.

Aleseus picked up Stitch and carried him back into our former cell, and since he had declared himself to be a healer he set the gnome down in front of the wounded celestial elves and ordered him to heal them.  Stitch took out a holy symbol that appeared to be a stylized sunburst and started doing exactly that.

Aleseus asked Rush to keep an eye on Stitch to make sure he didn’t make a run for it, and while telling him this both Aleseus and Rush noticed that the not-a-kenku birdman that Rush had warned us not to trust was now missing. At this point Rush and Aleseus had a bit of a difference of opinion on whose fault this was, with Rush saying that no one warned him to keep an eye on the person who he himself had warned was someone we should not trust.  In counterpoint, Aleseus pointed out that Rush was a gods-damned idiot who apparently needed to be reminded to wipe his own ass.

This, unfortunately, put some urgency on our plans, because if the birdman was a turncoat he could be at the very moment warning our captors of our escape. Aleseus warned the rest of the group of this, and also made a foray into the region of the caverns to the south where we had been digging earlier in order to arm himself with a dull mining pick. He also found an iron spike, which he tucked in his belt, and a hammer which he gave to Rush so that he might used it to fashion a wire if we found some copper.

The group discussed our options, and while Goodnick argued in favor of going after his bell immediately, the rest of the group was a little reluctant to face down a hill giant, so we ultimately decided to try to take down the guards in the party room to get Rush the copper he needed to call for rescue.

Saara listened at the door and was able to hear the sounds of revelry, and also snoring from some guards who were apparently partied out.  We asked Snitch for the name of one of the guards we killed, and he gave us the name Stan. With this information, Aleseus banged on the door and said he was Stan.  A very intoxicated-sounding guard asked him for the password, and with the response “cutlass” he opened the door. Aleseus and Saara, who were standing at the door, cut the man down and rushed in.

The room contained a long table on which were scattered cards and coins, against the far wall were 3 crates, and there was a closed door on the wall to our right. Around the table were a number of men playing cards, including one man in robes to the right of us and one very large man with an axe to the left.  Several men on the far side of the room were passed out unconscious and snoring.

Aleseus ran up to the man in robes and smacked him with the dull pickaxe, wounding but not killing him.

Kanithar charged across the room to engage the large human in combat, but had to double-move to get there so he could not attack.

Goodnick stayed in the last room, waved one hand above his head amid the sound of tinkling bells to summon a blast of golden light that zig-zagged around several people in the way to strike the mage Aleseus had wounded and kill the man. As he died, one of the other mercenaries shouted a curse at us for killing his friend “Fireball” McClanson.

The large mercenary stood up and swung his axe at Kanithar, striking him for 4 hp, Another mercenary on the far side of the table pulled out a crossbow and took a shot at Aleseus but missed.

As the large mercenary pulled back from the blow he landed on Kanithar, Zekrum charged him, striking with a sword he had taken from one of the guards for 8 damage, and then following up with a kick for an additional 6 damage.

Ogylo stepped to the room and recited a poem, “Roses are red, these guards be violet, if you’re all dead, it will at least stop the violence.” At the completion of this performance, the big guy with the axe and one of the sleeping guards, in addition to all the furniture around them, started glowing with violet Faerie Fire. The other merc that had fired his crossbow manage to shake off the power of the spell and remained un-glowy.

At this point Goodnick and Ogylo also noticed the door on the right side of the room crack open and someone peeking out.

Saara charged one of the mercs in the back-right corner of the room and skewered him with her swords, killing the man, and Aleseus charged another right next to him by missed with his pickaxe and just took out a chunk of the wall behind him.

In return for the axe wound he suffered, Kanithar shoved his sword right through the neck of the large merc, killing him to completely to death.

With the large merc down, Zekrum vaulted the table and stabbed the crossbowman with his sword and followed up by headbutting the man to death.

Goodnick stepped forward into the room and started gathering the power to summon one of his exalted blasts, but held the energy of the attack to unleash it against anyone coming through the door that he has seen crack open. He didn’t have to wait long, because almost immediately another mercenary in leather armor and one in robes charged through the door and into the room. Goodnick recited “Just as the butterfly was about to die, she became a caterpillar,” and blasted the first mercenary. Unfortunately, his unfamiliarity with insect biology seemed to have an effect on the potency of the blast, because he only scored a glancing hit for 1 hp of damage.

In response, the merc who Goodnick tried to blast charged up to the modron and stabbed out with his shortsword, but Goodnick dodged the attack.

The robed mercenary who came second through the door cast a magic missile at Goodnick and scored a solid hit for 5 hp of damage, which set the poor little guy screaming.

The screams woke up another drunk mercenary in the back of the room, who spent his turn just staggering to his feet.

The mercenary who Aleseus had previously struck at and missed swung his sword at Saara, but she gracefully ducked the blow, and then she stabbed him twice with the swords in both her hands, dealing 5 hp with the first attack and 4 with the second.  These attacks left the man barely standing, and so it was an easy matter for Aleseus to bring his pickaxe down on the man’s head and finish him off.

Although Ogylo seemed very uncomfortable holding a weapon, since he and Goodnick both suddenly found themselves engaged in hand to hand combat he took a wild swing with a shortsword and hit the merc who had just charged them for 2 hp of damage.

Kanithar moved up to engage the drunk at the back of the room who was still glowing with violet fay fire, hitting with the sword in his primary hand for 5 hp, and then he struck again with the sword in his other hand for 6 hp and killed the man.

Zekrum charged at the wizard who had just cast magic missile, and even though the wizard’s skin sparkled with the arcane force of mage armor, it didn’t stop the robo-monk from stabbing him with his sword for 4 damage, and then punching him in his “nerd belly” for an additional 5 hp that send him to his grave.

The mercenary that was standing over Goodnick and Ogylo swung at Goodnick again, ant this time manage to hit for 3 hp of damage.

The final drunk that was left at the back of the room fired a crossbow bolt at Kanithar but the undead warrior dodged the attack. While the drunk frantically tried to reload his crossbow, Saara charged him and sank both her blades into his chest for 9 hp and 4 hp, killing him.

Aleseus yelled at the last mercenary who had just struck Goodnick, “You leave my friend alone!” The minotaur then charged the man and brought his pickaxe squarely down on the man’s skull with a critical hit that killed him outright.

With the last opponent slain, Saara searched through the crates in the back of the room, while Aleseus scooped a copper coin off the table and ran it back to Rush so he could start fashioning it into a copper wire.  Goodnick used healing magic on himself to repair some of the damage the mercenaries had inflicted on him.

In one of the crates, Saara found a book, a bronze amulet, a shortsword with a silver hilt and the grip bound in green leather. When she picked up the sword, she heard a voice inside her mind ask her, in elvish, “What do you think you are doing?  Put me down.” The sword then inflicted 5 hp in psychic damage on her.   The sword said it belonged to Reinael and demanded that both it and the book from the crate be returned to him.

Goodnick inspected the book and found it was written in celestial, and it appeared to contain a list of Ildarin’s appointments, as recorded by her aide Reinael.  These items were duly returned to Reinael, and he seemed thankful of this.

In the 2nd crate, Saara found a leather necklace with a rodent skull on it, a worn bag, and a bone handled dagger.

The 3rd crate held a leather satchel with the word Xarushule etched on it, and 2 wrapped up scrolls. In the satchel was a copper wire, a fine silver wire, and a tiny bell. Goodnick was disappointed that this was not his bell. So, given the contents, it seemed like this bag belonged to Rush.  Was Rush’s real name Xarushule?

In a hidden side pocket of the satchel, Saara also found a note secreted away that said:

“X,
Pull this off and we’re even. Find out what they know about J. No fights. Will look for you after 3 cycles.
-A”

Saara hid the note back in its original pocket before taking the satchel to return it to Rush, who was still banging away with a hammer at the copper piece Aleseus had given him.  After delivering that copper piece, Aleseus himself had returned to the gambling room and swapped out the dull pickaxe he was wielding for the battle axe that the large human had been wielding.

Re: Flakes on a Plane

Chapter 3: Hell’s Bells

Among the equipment the group recovered from the blood-soaked party room was a bag that came from the same crate as the bone dagger. When Saara handled it, it made crinkling sounds.  Upon seeing this bag along with the bone dagger and rat skull pendant, the Frog-man, who identified himself as Prince Gelfo, demanded his stuff back.  He was pretty haughty about it, and declared that he better not find that we had taken even a “single carapace.” As Saara handed it back to him, he proceeded to open up the bag and start munching on the bugs and crustaceans contained within. Blech, he was welcome to them.

When Rush was questioned about the name Xarushule on his bag, he confirmed that was his full name with Rush being a shortened form that just took the middle consonant. After he was given his knapsack, the more observant members of the party noted that he subtly checked the hidden pocket, seemingly to verify the note within had not be discovered.

While Saara was returning the equipment we had found to the rightful owners, Aleseus searched the guards bedroom, but didn’t turn up anything other that some soiled bedrolls, two of which were still warm from recent occupation. The party room itself yielded 35 cp, 2 sp, and a deck of cards scattered across the table, which we collected.

Goodnick, meanwhile, was attempting to tend to the fairly grievous wounds he suffered in the battle.  The captured gnome cleric Stitch expressed admiration at how we were able to take out the guards (kiss-ass) and said if we all gathered together in a group he could heal us all. Several members of the group were suspicious of him casting a spell on us and stood back, because the man had until recently been one of our captors.  The more seriously wounded members of the company did gather around the cleric, and Goodnick nervously held Kanithar’s hand. Stitch proved good to his word, however, and after he took out out his holy symbol and a ruby (presumably a spell component), he cast his spell and the ruby started to glow before filling those around it with a warm feeling that totally healed their wounds.

At this point, the two elven ambassadors said that they had protection from the “natural” creatures of Pandemonium, and said that the urgent nature of their diplomatic mission prevented them from staying any longer now that they were healed and re-equipped. We all bid each other safe journey, and with that they headed out the crack in the wall of the cell and walked down the cliff outside (gravity is weird here) to continue their own journey.

Goodnick made it clear that he wasn’t going to go anywhere without his bell, and several others among the escaped prisoners were also eager to get their gear back before making good our escape.  Stitch warned us that there were other guards that were posted over toward the staging area, but Kramm himself was likely asleep and drunk off his ass, because the mercenaries had found if they didn’t keep him that way he tended to start killing people.  Rush said that now that he had his copper wire he could cast the spell at any time that would call for help from his allies, however he warned that once he did pierce the magical wards around the caverns in that way it would likely set off an alarm. We agreed that we would try to sneak near Kramm’s chamber to recover our gear, and Rush would give us 15 min before casting his spell.  The loud noise of the winds roaring outside would hopefully help in covering any sounds we made. Rush pointed out that the passageway that lead that way seemed small enough that Kramm would likely not be able to squeeze through it (or at least not easily) if we did have to retreat in a hurry.

Near the door to the left of our former cell, Saara noticed a breeze because the door was partially ajar already, and as she paused to listen she heard 2 male voices from the other side.   She and Aleseus crept forward to peek through.  We saw a guard there talking to Otho (the creepy elven man with the whip and the living tattoos).

The guard and “ I don’t understand, Sir, why didn’t you go through the portal with the others?  I thought they had the manifest with them?”

Otho said “Look, I know the manifest is still in the cavern.”

At this point, the guard glanced over toward us, and as he did the elf stabbed him in the back, killing the man.  After doing this, Otho’s face transformed, so that he looked exactly like the guard he just killed. He searched the guards corpse, and after relieving the deceased of any useful gear, he turned to head back toward the staging area/Kramm’s quarters.

At this point Saara made to move forward and attack the changling, but Aleseus physically restrained her by palming the top of her head.  Saara turned and prepared to stab Aleseus instead (apparently she is a bit bloodthirsty) but Aleseus explained that he only held her back because there was a good chance anyone killing the mercenaries was someone on our side.  This calmed Saara down enough to keep her from attacking, but she still didn’t seem really happy. Someone in the group (I forget who) theorized that the shapechanger was possibly Zoso, the missing bird person.

We continued sneaking down the hallway beyond the door, with Saara and Aleseus in the lead and the rest of the group following behind. The area past the door was obviously a guard station, containing a chair and table.  On the table was a book (of poetry) and a candle which burned with the same blue flame as all the torch sconces we had seen, with the blue color matching the ambient glow that seemed to suffuse Pandemonium (or this part of pandemonium anyway).  Saara heard the sound of boots and a clicking sound coming toward us from down the hall, and so everyone rapidly hid. We saw two Gilded Chain mercenaries leading two mean looking dog-like creature approaching us, and as we prepared to ambush them one of the dogs started barking at Saara. Way to spoil the surprise, asshole dog.

Ogylo’s quick reflexes gave him a jump on the action, and he used the opportunity to inspire Aleseus by complementing the minotaur on the way he had been using his head.

He dogs were next up, disappearing from existence to reappear with one right next to Ogylo and one next to Goodnick. Ogylo was bitten in the leg for 2 hp, and the other dog took a might chomp down on Goodnick’s metal leg for a whopping 6 hp of damage.

Zekrum moved up to assist Goodnick and stabbed the dog that was latched onto him, dealing 8 hp of damage, and then followed up with a kick it its dog-face for an additional 7 hp.

Saara was up next, and she charged the closest of the two guards (who appeared to be twins). Saara’s first blade slashed across the guard’s chest for 9 hp of damage, and then she struck again with the bade in her off-hand for an additional 6 hp, but the guard did not fall.

The wounded guard struck out at Saara with his own shortsword for 5 hp, and as he swung he yelled to his brother to “Go and get the rest of them.”  His twin, however, either didn’t hear this or chose to ignore the command, because he also charged forward and swung his sword at Saara, but the attack missed.

Mzungu was up next, and after gathering a handful of pebbles he cast magic stone and then hurled one at the wounded guard.  The Vedalken’s aim was true, striking his target square in the head for 9 hp of damage and killing the man.  “I always wanted to do a set of twins,” he quipped, eliciting some uncomfortable laughter from his comrades.

Aleseus rushed up to the remaining guard, brining his battle axe down in a double-handed blow on the man’s clavicle for 7 hp.

Goodnick, now leaking lubricant at an alarming rate again, cast sacred flame on the wounded dog who was savaging his leg, but the dog proved too nimble to hit and the flames guttered out without effect.

Ogylo, decided his skills were better suited away from the front lines of battle, and so he disengaged and retreated away from the blood-and-lubricant-thirsty dogs

The wounded dog that previously attacked Goodnick apparently had a taste for metal, because it turned on Zekrum and bit the robo-monk for 5 hp.  It then phased out of existence again, and as it did so Zekrum and Goodnick took opportunity attacks.  The dog evaded Zekrum’s strike, but Goodnick manage to land a punch for 1 hp of damage. After disappearing, the dog appeared next to a very surprised and frustrated Ogylo.

With Ogylo now out of biting range of the dog that previously attacked him, that dog now turned on  Goodnick, but this time the little modron was able to evade the bite. The dog then shimmered as if trying to teleport, but seemed unable to. Zekrum stabbed down at the wounded dog, sliding his sword between the creature’s ribs to find its heart and kill the beast.  He spun around and kicked the other dog for 5 hp.

Saara slashed with both of her swords at the no-longer-a-twin, slashing him from shoulder to waist with the first strike for 7 hp and hitting with the second for an additional 3 hp, leaving the man reeling but still on his feet. The guard attempted to strike back at her, but was apparently distracted by his wounds and his strike went wide.

Mzungu went into a windup and pitched another magic stone at the 2nd mercenary, but the guard ducked he incoming missile.

Kanithar had no better luck as he moved up to engage with the dog on Ogylo, and the dog evaded both his strikes.

Goodnick waved one hand over his head and intoned “Each day I’m closer to finding the perfect job.”  This super magical phrase summoned a blast of exalted energy that fired toward the remaining mercenary, but it only struck him a glancing blow for 2 hp, and the man was still on his feet.

Aleseus took another chop with his battle axe at the guard, but the man was now desperately dodging for his life and evaded the blow.

Ogylo, for his action, kicked the dead dog at his feet, just to make extra sure it was dead.

The other, still living dog tried to bite at Goodnick again, but missed. In return, Zekrum tried to stab and kick at the dog, but the wily beast seemed to be on to his tricks now, and it evaded both strikes.

Saara struck again at the guard, and was finally able to land a 4 hp killing blow.

Mzungu, probably disappointed at having missed the opportunity to “do” both twins, turned to launch his last magic stone at the dog, but the rock missed and ricocheted down the hall behind us.

With the last mercenary accounted for, Aleseus charged back to Goodnick’s aid, bringing his axe down on the animal’s neck as mercifully as possible to grant the creature a quick death by beheading.

With the battle finished, we resumed our stealthy way further down the hallway, which opened up into a very high-ceilinged room (40’ tall).  Saara recalled from the directions Stitch had given us that the area further to our right was the staging area, while the area to the left, which was partitioned off from the rest of the room by a 20’ tall wall, lead to Kramm’s quarters and our gear. We could hear the sound of very loud snoring from that direction, and the fact that we could hear it above the howling winds of pandemonium was evidence of exactly how loud the snoring was.

Sneaking around the partition wall with almost supernatural quiet (she initially failed her stealth roll but then used an inspiration to succeed), Saara spotted a number of crates stacked just inside the wall, and on the far side of the room she saw a very large door, from behind which the snoring sound emanated.

Saara cracked open the first crate and found her own gear, which she quickly donned.  She then opened a second crate and saw more gear that she did not recognize.  She motioned back behind her for Aleseus to come forward and help her.  Wide eyed, Aleseus stayed rooted in place and shook his head no.  Saara glared back at him impatiently and made more exaggerated motions for him to move forward.  With a premonition of impending doom, Aleseus sighed and moved forward as quietly as he could with soft clops of his hooves.  He picked up one of the crates, and then when turning back he promptly tripped over a spear leaning against the wall and dropped the crate with a deafening crash.

This crash was followed immediately by a roar from behind the door that seemed to shake the room. At this, we all dispensed with any attempt at stealth and erupted into action. Saara grabbed everything should could hold out of one of the crates and booked it back the way we had come.  Aleseus grabbed 2 crates and attempted to run, but got tangled in the spear again and ended up spilling the contents out at the feet of the rest of the group. Mzungu rushed forward and helped Aleseus back up onto his hooves, and Zekrum came forward and scooped up his own gear, including his twice-damned spear.  Ogylo also came forward to collect his humbox and other equipment.

Ahead of us, we heard a massive splintering of wood as the giant-sized door was wrenched from its hinges and Kramm the hill giant stepped into the room.  The giant hurled the door at Alleseus, but the gods of Olympus were smiling on the minotaur that day and the door flew over his head to shatter against the far wall.

Goodnick gathered up his gear, kicked the bag belonging to Kanithar toward the undead warrior, and  then started sprinting back toward safety.

At this point, the roaring of the giant and howling of the winds was joined by an ear splitting scream of an alarm as the warding around the caverns started pulsing a warning.  Apparently our 15 minutes were up and Rush had cast his spell.  It was clearly time to go.  Aleseus and Mzungu, scooped up their own gear and charged for the exit passage, followed closely by Zekrum and Ogylo.

This Just left Kanithar behind.  The undead warrior looked up to see Kramm stomp up to him and raise the tree-trunk he was using as a club over his head. Just as the giant was about to bring the club down onto Kanithar the Maybe-not-so-Undying, a beam of blinding light streaked across the room and obscured the giants head.  When the light disappeared, the giant’s head disappeared with it, and Kramm’s body dropped like a sack of giant ugly potatoes.

We all looked to the source of this beam and saw a woman who had just entered the room. She appeared human-ish, in her early 30s, and she was carrying a staff with a crystal mounted on the end. She let out a cough, and as she did so 2 butterflies came out of her mouth.

Rush entered the room, smiled at the woman, and said “OK then, I guess we’re leaving…”

Re: Flakes on a Plane

Here is most of whom you have met so far:
Andra- Human, Female.  A magic user responsible for your escape from Phlegethon, the third layer of Pandemonium.  Responded to Rush’s sending spell for help. Helped you fend off the hill giant Kraam, and took you through a portal to Sigil via a safe house on the Astral Plane, since plane shifting directly into Sigil is forbidden.  Had no patience for the difficulty some of you had in moving on the Astral, and soon rendered you unconscious. Some of her spells cause strange manifestations.

Prince Gelfo- Grung, Male.  One of your fellow prisoners.  Rude and cowardly, but quick to take advantage of your escape plan.  Gelfo’s current whereabouts are unknown- you remember him being with your group during the plane shift, but not after.

Ambassador Ildarin and Reinael, her retainer- two Eladrin on their way to visit the Queen of Air and Darkness in the Unseelie Court on Pandemonium.  Waylaid by the Gilded Chain for an unknown reason. Joy executed their bodyguard by tossing him outside of the prison camp’s ward without protection, where he was quickly slain and devoured by the creatures below.  Reinael’s sword, a sentient blade bestowed by Queen Morwen of the Court of Stars, was returned to him, allowing he and Lady Ildarin to pass through the ward without fear of the other denizens of the plane.

Xarushule, “Rush”- Elf, Male.  Acted as agent for Andra with an unknown purpose, but part of it seemed to involve getting captured by the Guilded Chain to find out what they know about a mysterious person/being named J.  Rush pretended to be unconscious while he observed the party, and later proposed an escape plan, allowing Andra to locate the party and stage a rescue.

Zoso- a Kenku Male.  Introduced himself shortly after the party members found themselves imprisoned, and gave them some information about their captors and fellow prisoners.  Zoso disappeared soon after the party escaped their cell, but not before Rush alerted them that Kenku can only speak common in repeated parrot phrases.

Laru and her son Amin- the innkeeper of the Venture Forth, an establishment in a part of Sigil popular with adventurers which now lies in disrepair and low in supplies due to a dispute with the bank, run by the Orzhov Syndicate.  Andra and Rush had brought the party to the Venture Forth after their escape, and Andra asked Laru to look after them while they recovered.

The Guilded Chain- a mercenary band that, according to Stitch, has turned more cutthroat and murderous since its former captain Goldfinch had been lost in battle.

Captain Gharsis- Draconic Male.  The new leader of the Guilded Chain, responsible for its more bloodthirsty direction.

Kraam- Hill Giant, Male.  Former member of the Guilded Chain.  Kraam was left to guard the camp. Despite your best efforts, you roused him from his drunken sleep in your escape, but Andra arrived before he could squash you, disintegrating much of Kraam’s head.

Otho- Elf, Male.  Member of the Guilded Chain.  A vicious fighter, covered in shifting tattoos of a magical nature.  He manifested a swarm of stirges to waylay your escape, but was held back by Andra’s wall of force.

Joy- Unknown.  Member of the Guilded Chain.  A billowing black cloak hides his form from head to toe.  An alabaster white mask, a grinning demon, covers his face.  When Stitch saw Zekrum speed across a guard station and eliminate two thugs, he later remarked that Zekrum moves ‘like Joy’.

Stitch- Deep Gnome, Male.  Cleric of Calladuran Smoothhands.  A combat medic that belonged to the Guilded Chain back when Captain Goldfinch was in charge and most members were professional soldiers.  Stitch had grown increasingly uneasy about the new regime under Captain Gharsis, which had hired dozens of thugs to bolster its numbers. Stitch cared for the party and shared what he knew about the prison camp, including the password to the guard barracks.

Jesker Jornson- Bariaur, Male.  A jovial, adventurous Horizon Walker, a type of ranger that patrols the Outer Planes.  Jesker arrived at the Venture Forth soon after the party roused itself at Andra’s request.  Jesker told the party that they may be able to get some leads on the Guilded Chain at a cutter dive he knows called the Way Down.  He told them that he’d show them the way, if they didn’t mind stopping off to deliver an item of value to one of his employers first.  Along the way, Jesker shows capable skill with javelin and spear.

Sever Blackash- Duergar, Male.  Forgemaster and proprietor of the Blackash Forge.  The Forge deals in custom planar weapons and high quality crafts, many of which are magic.  Sever often employs agents to retrieve rare and exotic materials, and quickly cuts a deal with the party to obtain a special reagent.

Sherm- Half-Elf, Male.  A nature enthusiast, and one of Sever’s contacts.  After satisfying himself that the party wasn’t acting on behalf of any legal authorities, Sherm rendered two druid guards unconscious for about half a day, allowing the party access to a cave they were guarding.
